RIO GRANDE DO SUL

Located in the extreme south of the country, the state of Rio Grande do Sul is the “most European” part of Brazil. Its landscape is brightened by flowers, in sultriness, and whitened by snow, especially in the mountains, where the winter can be rigorous. The mountainous municipalities that most evokes Europe are Canela and Gramado with its mountains, woods, green valleys and flowers galore in the springtime. And it is not all, besides the European influence, gaucho people (as residents are called) cultivate the traditions of the Pampas - region of the border with Uruguay and Argentina -, such as the chimarrao, the typical barbecue churrasco and wears the bombacha, boots and large hats. The state capital is the city of Porto Alegre, one of the places with the largest amount of trees in Brazil; where natural beauty contrasts with the urban life of the capital which is very culturally agitated.
