MARANHAO

Located in a transition area between the Northeast and the northern regions of Brazil, the state of Maranhao displays a wide variety of ecosystems; a mix of beaches, forests, cerrados, lakes, and rivers. It also has one of the most interesting geological phenomena in the country, a desert area formed by dunes and lagoons of fresh and clear waters that give the state international fame. The capital is Maranhão, one of the few Brazilians cities founded by French; home of more than 4000 historical buildings- all dated from the 18th and 19th century- located in the historical centre, the city principal attraction. The state offers also incredible waterfalls, interesting ecological trails and beautiful views of Chapada das Mesas.

For eco-tourism lover, two good choices are, the Chapada das Mesas, very demanded for the rappel, where the scenery is plenty of waterfalls, trails, and rivers and the Lençois Maranhenses that covered with white sandy dunes, beautiful rivers and amazing seashore is ideal for dune climbing, kite surfing, wind skating, wind car and wind surfing.
